Surrounded by dozens of small lakes and located in the western part of the state, the city of Fergus Falls, MN, is close to several destinations that attract visitors from all over the region. 1. Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge
Established in 1938 and managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge is an excellent day trip destination for residents of Fergus Falls and other towns and cities in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Featuring rolling hills, lakes, streams, swamps, and rivers, this national wildlife refuge welcomes visitors with some of the most beautiful landscapes in the state, as well as plenty of opportunities for outdoor sports and other recreational activities.
The main entrance to the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge is located a little under 65 miles northeast of downtown Fergus Falls, making it possible to reach it in about an hour and 20 minutes by car along route US-59. 2. Fargo
With a population of about 250,000, the city of Fargo is the largest urban area in the state of North Dakota and a great place to visit whether you are a fan of the homonymous T.V. series or not. Although it is a small city compared to most other state capitals in the United States, Fargo offers plenty of attractions that make it a popular day trip destination among residents of Fergus Falls and other nearby towns.
Once you make your way to the Downtown Fargo District, a good way to start exploring is by going for a walk along Broadway Street, which is lined with dozens of cafés and local restaurants. Not far from here, you can find the Fargo Theatre, the Plains Art Museum, and the Bonanzaville open-air museum. Once you are done exploring the city center, make your way back across the Red River and visit the Viking Ship Park and the Hjemkomst Center.
3. Glendalough State Park
Covering an area of a little under 2,000 acres, Glendalough State Park is another great day trip spot for Fergus Falls residents. This public recreation area opened its doors to the public in 1992 and offers plenty of recreational facilities for activities including boating, fishing, camping, hiking, kayaking, and canoeing. This park is located a little under 25 miles east of downtown Fergus Falls, making it possible to reach it in about half an hour by car.
