4 of the Best Picnic Spots in Driving Distance of Fergus Falls, MN

Who doesn’t love a good picnic? We certainly do! That’s why we’ve put together a list of the best picnic spots around Fergus Falls, MN. Pack a lunch and hit the road to visit one of these great picnic lunch destinations!

Broken Down Dam Park

You can find the ruins of a hydroelectric gravity dam that provided power to the city of Fergus Falls in 1907 at 427 Broken Down Dam Rd. Make sure you park your Buick Envision in their parking and turn around area, then grab your basket from the large cargo area. Take the trailhead to the left of the park marker for a direct hike to the ruins, or try out one of the other trails to see the beautiful Otter Tail River before you stop for lunch.

Central Lakes Trail

Looking for a nice hike before your picnic lunch? In addition to having multiple beautiful spots to sit and enjoy some picnic foods, this trail has over 55 miles of gorgeous views to hike through. It takes you through ten different towns, and you’ll see multiple lakes and rivers as well as our beautiful local flowers and wildlife.  The trail is open to bikes and hikers.

You’ll want to start your visit by parking at the Central Lakes State Trail Trailhead, Hwy 210. Then, you can follow the former railroad turned paved bike trail for as long as you feel comfortable before stopping to enjoy your picnic.

Glendalough State Park

If you want to settle in to a fun afternoon without having to hike to get there, then you’ll want to go to 24869 Whitetail Lane. Here, you can sit on the sandy beach or pick a spot to settle in the rolling countryside. You can also rent their lodge for the day if you would like to have a place inside to rest.

If you like water, you can also canoe on Annie Battle Lake. You can even stop in to the park office to borrow a fishing kit! Of course, if you like hiking, that’s also an option here with their paved Glendalough Trail loop of the more scenic Beaver Pond Interpretive Trail.

Maplewood State Park

This scenic spot is great for a quiet afternoon picnic. While it boasts 25 miles of hiking, it also has eight major lakes where you can settle in for an afternoon. If you like fishing, be sure to bring your gear. This park is beautiful year-round, but be sure to stop by in the fall to see the truly breathtaking leaf colors of fall. You can find the entrance at 39721 Park Entrance Road.
