The 2022 Chevy Colorado has quickly become one of the best midsize trucks on the market, with its unique blend of practical, day-to-day usability, excellent off-road performance and smooth handling on the tarmac. The Colorado aims for the versatility of a traditional pickup and has a wide range of options to allow you to tailor it to your own specific needs. Despite only minor changes for this year, the Colorado still easily stands out in its class.
Overview
The Colorado is easily as capable as its larger Silverado sibling, but its smaller and lighter frame makes handling less of a chore. The Colorado far from compromises on practicality, thanks to a powerful V6 engine option that can make over 300hp. Uniquely, buyers can also opt for a four-cylinder diesel option. New for 2022 is the return of the Trail Boss package, which greatly enhances the off-road capabilities of the LT and Z71 variants.
Engines and Performance
There is a wide range of engines and powertrains available for the Colorado. The base model gets a 2.5-liter, 200hp four-cylinder diesel, routed through a six-speed automatic transmission. A turbodiesel option is available as well, also using the six-speed automatic. While it makes a maximum of 180hp, where it excels is in torque, where it can develop a maximum of 368lb-ft. It’s the perfect engine option if you expect to be doing a lot of towing.
The final engine option is a powerful 3.6-liter V6, which makes up to 308hp and 275lb-ft of torque. It’s the only gasoline engine option available, and this powertrain uses an eight-speed automatic transmission. It’s also the fastest available, making 0-60 in just over six seconds.
Towing and Payload Capacity
Unsurprisingly, the larger turbodiesel excels at towing and hauling. The maximum towing capacity with this engine is 7,700lbs, compared to 7,000lbs with the V6 and 3,500lbs with the standard four-cylinder. When it comes to payload capacity, the Colorado maxes out at over 1,500lbs, and its’ expansive bed makes hauling bulky objects a breeze.
Safety
The Colorado achieved the highest possible score of Good in IIHS testing, and it also has a range of safety features that can be installed on the LT and Z71 trims. This includes forward collision alert and lane departure warnings, while the Z71 has rear parking assist as standard (it’s available as an option on the LT trim).
Technology
The Colorado has a Wi-Fi Hotspot, two touchscreens and Chevrolet’s premium Infotainment 3 system. The base model has a 7.0-inch touchscreen, but this is upgraded to an 8.0-inch in all other trims.
